Project Abstract:
This project will serve as part of a larger effort to create a hazard map and an evacuation plan for the visitors and surrounding communities of the Masaya volcano in Nicaragua. This volcano is located 20 km south of the capital Managua. It is Nicaragua's first and largest national park, and one of 78 protected areas of Nicaragua. Within a nested set of calderas and craters lies a sub-vent, which is the Masaya Volcano sensu stricto. It is a shield type composing of basaltic lavas and tephras and includes a summit crater. This volcano formed 2,500 years ago by an 8-km³ basaltic ignimbrite eruption. Masaya is the most active volcano in the region, erupting at least 19 times in the last 500 years. On April 23, 2001 the crater exploded and formed a new vent in the bottom of the crater. The explosion sent rocks with diameters up to 60 cm which travelled up to 500 m from the crater. Vehicles in the visitor’s area were damaged and one person was injured. On October 4, 2003 an eruption cloud was reported at Masaya. The plume rose to a height of ~4.6 km. In 2008, the mountain erupted spewing ash and steam.
With increased visitation to the park and a growing nearby population, these recent eruptions are posing greater risks. By researching previous eruption events we can create a map showing the distance from the vents which hazards can reach. This will allow us to create evacuation plans in which visitors and community members can safely retreat. For the hazards and evacuation maps we will be using GIS Software to create preliminary maps. Field work will consist of verifying the GIS map and adding detail where needed. The quality and state of roads is impossible to verify via GIS. Evacuation routes will be planned accordingly on site, based on the most travelled and safest roads. From there we will create a final version of both maps.
Project Learning Goals or Intended Outcomes:
-
Learn how to conduct research before visiting the field area
-
Determine common hazard zones to better inform and prepare the public
-
Learn field techniques
-
Learn proper project development/research methods and implementation.
-
Gain hands on experience using GIS Software
Outdoor EDGE Project Proposal: Independent Project with Travel
Please complete your Outdoor EDGE project proposal by fully addressing the following details. Rigor is an expectation, and is defined as attention to detail within work that is done with care.
-
Outdoor Significance: In a paragraph, explain how your project will engage you in the outdoors to gain perspectives on stewardship, outdoor skills, a sense of place, and/or literacy of the natural world in a manner that is rigorous enough to lead to a meaningful learning experience. If applicable, please include citations to reliable references*.
This project is a combination of research and field work. I will be traveling to a new country and spending my days in the outdoors. This project will help me learn skills for working in the field. I will learn proper methods of data collection and how to take that information and form conclusions. Nature will be around me constantly. A connection with the land is a bonus and familiarity will begin. Nature is an important part of life. I have spent a lot of time in the outdoors but this will be a new environment for me to learn.
-
Personal or Professional Development: In a paragraph (or two), please explain how your project ties into your personal or professional development. How does your project help you work toward or complete academic requirements, develop your professional skills and/or abilities, or tie into your lifelong learning endeavors?
This project allows me to be responsible for the preparation of data as well as the knowledge of making a trip to a study site. It will help me gain skills that will be valuable to an employer both in office tasks as well as field work. I will be responsible for the research, data entry, as well as interpretation of the data with research before we go to the study site, at the study site and, implementation and/or correction of the data once the trip is completed. This project will help me learn to plan and execute research. This of course will help my professional development.
It will help me personally by knowing that I can accomplish things that I want to do. This project is directly related to the field I am working towards. It will help me learn identification and application of skills required for research both in the field and in the office. My knowledge will be expanded and skills acquired for my professional goals; particularly the fieldwork experience. Learning what potential employers are looking for in an employee now will give me an advantage verses other candidates.
-

Safety Briefing: Please complete a safety briefing for your project. In this statement, please identify the risks you are taking and how you intend to mitigate them. If applicable, please include citations to reliable references
Hi there! Thank you for helping me with my EDGE Project for Southern Utah University. As the study area is out of the country proper travel planning is essential. Please be prepared with all items you will need for travel as well as needs for being out in the field.
This area has a wide diversity of animal some of which are harmful to us. Through the trips entirety wear shoes, even shower shoes. Parasites live in the soils here are no one needs to go home with them.
Some other encounters that could result in harmful situation include snakes. There are some pretty venomous species here and you should always use caution while we are out and follow these steps
Stay on the designated trails
Stay calm and back away
Never attempt to pick up or hold them
This area also has jaguar, ocelot, and cougars. These animals are concentrated within the 78 different protected areas located here. Bull sharks and caiman’s are likely lurking in the water as well. Keep your eyes out. As with most animals if you do encounter one you must remain calm.
As we are traveling in a group no one should be alone no matter if we are out in the field or getting something to eat. If some accident were to occur notify the advisors immediately if they are not present. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to speak up so we can all have a good time.
-
Mentor Information: Please write down the name, email, and phone number for your mentor. Please explain the skills, abilities, and/or experience your mentor has to make him or her a qualified mentor for your project. The purpose of a mentor is to have someone who can offer guidance and advice. If you do not have a mentor, please explain why and list the qualifications you have to complete this project without a mentor.
My mentor is Dr. Jason Kaiser. Jasonkaiser@suu.edu . Being a geology professor at SUU Dr. Kaiser is very appropriate to be my mentor. He is very knowledgeable of the volcanism involved with my project.
