Rebecca Mifflin Hedges

Southern Utah University
Cedar City, Utah
Geology, student

Hello! Welcome to my portfolio.

I am from Cedar City, Utah and a senior at Southern Utah University also in Cedar City, Utah. I am working towards a Bachelor of Science in Geology.  I have a wonderful 10-year-old boy.

Throughout my education I have worked on many papers and projects. With this Portfolio I will share some of my work.

One requirement of graduation is too complete the EDGE Program. Edge is an education designed to give experience. This is a four-part program. There are three courses, the first introduces you to the program. The Second helps you prepare a project. Next, you execute the project you planned. The third class is about reflecting on the project you did.

My Edge project also turned into my Senior research project and was completed through the outdoor track. I chose to create a hazard map and an alternate evacuation route for the communities surrounding the Volcano Masaya in Nicaragua. I was able to go to Nicaragua on a study abroad trip through SUU to obtain data collection. My paper is currently in the works to be submitted for publication.

Projects:

EDGE Project

The Volcano Masaya

The EDGE program is a three course class designed to take students through the planning, execution, and reflection of a service based project. They have four different tracks you can choose from. This was a service project through the outdoor engagement track. It was developed to aid communities surrounding the Volcano Masaya in Nicaragua in the event of an eruption. Most of the research completed was done before the visit to the study location. A trip to the Study site in Nicaragua was completed through a Study Abroad Program. Once we returned, a map was created depicting the hazards and alternate evacuation routes.

Publications:

“Clarification of Formations located in the Parowan Gap zone in Southwestern Utah”

Collected samples of the various members located at the study site and compared them to other known members. We used heavy liquid separation to retrieve zircons for age dating. Thin sections were also made to use petrographic data as well. The Mineralogy and Structural classes then wrote a paper which was recently submitted for publication. I was in the Mineralogy class.

“A New Formation in Southwestern Utah; The Grand Castle Formation”

Samples were collected from the grand castle formation. A stratigraphic column was created. The tectonic environment was established. This sections were created to collect petrographic information. From this information we determined the location and composition of the sediment source and what tectonic events lead to the creation of the localized formation. The Sedimentary/Stratigraphy and tectonics classes are currently writing a paper that will be submitted for publication.
